About Us
Wee Readers was established on July 4, 2005. We periodically refocus the website to reflect evolving interests. Our original idea was to create a place on the web where parents could find book recommendations paired with related activities for their very young children. Later the website expanded to include book reviews, articles, biographical information about authors and illustrators, and helpful resource links. We strive to continue to make the website relevant to parents, teachers, and other adults who care about fostering a lifelong love of reading in children.
Our mission is to help parents and other caregivers learn about child literacy issues, in general, and share real ways to help children develop a lifelong enjoyment of reading, in particular. We believe that it is important to read to very young children, because it is an enjoyable way to spend quality time together, it helps them develop their language skills as well as visual and cognitive abilities, including their imagination, and it helps them develop important pre-reading skills, which include things such as how to hold a book, how to turn pages, associating words with pictures, reading from left to right, understanding that individual letters together form words, and so forth. Reading to a very young child is about laying a foundation and having a positive experience together.
Wee Readers is a member of Harvard University's Family Involvement Network of Educators.
