| Recess! the Radio Program |
For three minutes five days each week, a program called Recess! can be heard on 500 public radio stations across the country. Recess! is a program geared for grown ups, but the content would generally be okay for kids to hear (though they may not really “get it”). Recess! usually takes a playful, yet really interesting look into the culture of our own childhoods as well as that of our children’s. No topic, person, or event is too obscure to be included in this treasure trove! Recent shows have explored subjects like the Banana Slug String Band, Vincent Van Gogh, Tag (the game), A Year with Frog and Toad (the musical), Inventing Away in August, Annie Oakley, and Ogden Nash. About half of the shows are based on children’s literature. The other half are cultural topics related to television, movies, music, folklore, toys, and, yes, the Internet.
The program is produced by the Center for Children’s Literature and Culture at the University of Florida. Listen to Recess! on public radio.
