Many library systems across the country have summer reading programs for children who are in preschool through high school. Programs can be geared for children as young as two years old. In some cases, libraries are able to offer incentives for kids to read (or have read to them) a specific number of pages or complete books within a certain timeframe. The prizes are things like a free pass to a local museum or sporting event, a coupon for a free dessert at a local restaurant, a discount at a local bookstore, a raffle drawing, a certificate of completion, a bookmark, or stickers. Summer reading programs differ in their structure. Some simply supply a list of recommended books and offer general support. Others are highly organized and require children to either participate in library-based activities or complete assignments at home. In general, libraries tend to ratchet up their family programming during the summer months with events such as dance performances, puppet shows, animal exhibits, craft times, and story hours. These are free events, but due to their popularity, patrons often have to pre-register for them. And while there, check out a children’s book that is the same theme as whatever event you came to see! Find out about summer reading programs and other library activities by visiting your local library’s website. Here is a complete online list of public libraries in the U.S.
But libraries are not the only place offering incentives for kids to read books during the summer. National Amusements, a movie theatre chain, has Bookworm Wednesdays at 36 of its locations, which include Cinema de Lux, the Bridge, Showcase Cinema, and Multiplex Cinema. Relatively recent children’s movies are shown each Wednesday for about eight weeks. Older kids have to submit a book review to gain free admission, but accompanying adults and children under six years old do not. Check out National Amusement’s Bookworm Wednesdays.
